English 182, which builds on skills learned in English 181, is designed to provide Health Sciences Center students with intermediate level skills in composition, listening, and reading. Paragraph organization is reviewed by means of writing summaries, and writing five-paragraph essays further develops skills. Since extended writing reflects thought processes, the cognitive skills of sequencing, generalizing, synthesizing, and making inferences and judgements about information are incorporated into the writing part of the course. This program is designed to include the broadly scientific rhetorical functions of process, definition, and comparison/contrast. Reading and listening, especially to extract information, are integral parts of the course. Academic and scientific/medical English vocabulary is developed through reading and listening.

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class by students signing an attendance register. If students come to class more than 10 minutes after the start of the first hour of the class period, they may attend class, but they are considered absent for that hour. Students who are not present at the start of the second hour of the class period are considered absent for that hour. Students missing more than 10 unexcused hours of class will automatically be awarded a grade of “F/A.” To check on attendance, students should go to the Student Affairs Office, Faculty of Medicine, not their instructor or the departmental secretary. If students are ill, they can get a medical excuse, which must be given to the English Language Unit departmental secretary within three days after students return to class. To obtain a medical excuse, students must report to Student Affairs, Faculty of Medicine. All graded assignments are due by 3:00 p.m. on the scheduled due date. ANY WORK SUBMITTED LATER THAN THAT WILL BE PENALIZED. Starting at 3:01 p.m. that day, 25% will be deducted from students’ outline, rough draft, and revision grades. An additional 25% will be taken off their grades for each subsequent class day that they are late in submitting the assignment. If students are absent from class on a day an assignment is due, they must present the English Language Unit departmental secretary (Jabriya) with an official doctor’s excuse within three days after their return to class. However, any work assigned prior to the health-related absence is due on the day students return to class. Students are responsible for finding out about and completing any work assigned during any absence. The work is due upon the students’ return to class.
There is zero tolerance for plagiarism. Plagiarism is using other people’s words and ideas without acknowledging the source of that information. Students who plagiarize will receive an F for the assignment. Students whose work is plagiarized will receive an F for the assignment. Students are not to loan their essays to another student for any reason, for they will receive an F if that student – with or without their knowledge – plagiarizes their work. Teachers will refer students suspected of plagiarizing or allowing their work to be plagiarized to the director of the English Language Unit, Faculty of Medicine, or her deputy.
Students who are 10 or more minutes late presenting for an examination will not be allowed to sit for the examination without written permission from the Vice-Dean Academic, Faculty of Medicine. Any students wishing to be excused for medical reasons from examinations shall, prior to the examinations, submit a request to the Dean/Vice-Dean Academic, Faculty of Medicine, who will decide the validity of the request and, in cases where necessary, will refer students to the relevant faculty specialist for care.
§ The midterm examination will be held on April 17, 2003, at 9:00-11:00 a.m.
§ The final examination will be held on May 29, 2003, at 9:00 a.m.

During scheduled conferences, students may review their midterm and final examinations. Afterwards, these grades are considered final and will not be changed.
Students who have earned an F for the course or have been excused prior to the final examination for medical reasons by the Vice-Dean Academic, Faculty of Medicine, are eligible to take the English 182 resit final examination.
